Instead, focus on the birds still breathing outside
There’s Something About The Rain
Especially at night,
Its presence an unexpected gift,
A breath, caught at your throat.
Tender fingers reach out of windows,
Wrists rotate in rhythm with the earth,
With life. This gift of
Rain, the night, and this new, insatiable will to live.
To Find Peace in Solitude
When language has done all that it can,
And the tongue becomes a limp, exhausted thing,
Remember that your body is still here,
Still so adept at loving you.
Listen to it, how it constantly reminds you
That the most important thing you will ever be
Is wherever you’re headed.
At night, when you have existed enough,
Do not worry about tomorrow,
If your body will end up somewhere grander,
Or somewhere simpler, more tender, quieter.
Instead, focus on the birds still breathing outside,
On the night and how more of it will come.
Your end does not deserve you yet.
What will you be?
The sun rises through airport windows,
Arriving like a breath,
Like a sigh of relief.
The same sun which greeted Adam and Eve
Upon their arrival.
Did God teach them about dawn,
About the difference between sun-kissed and
Sun-burnt.
Were we meant to feel it all?
The first to know what it is to lose a home,
To be so close to the divine and to still choose
What can be held.
Does the waiting make the reward sweeter?
Would we choose it all over again,
When God asked “what will you be?”
And we screamed, more.
