Cheetah print coat

red hot flashes run through my mind

I live and breathe in corners of rooms,
words escape my mouth in a soft mumble,
always ask for less than I need,
settling for water and sand alone,
walking in the faint moonlight,
whispering to the unknown,
twirling through the streets but I’m not dancing,
my head hanging low and my heart beating,
sharp needles sticking out like claws,
red hot flashes run through my mind.
threading faster as I hear footsteps,
wishing I was born with fire or grenades to throw,
counting on evolution to grant me wings to fly,
for I don’t want to feel the need to burn my skin in the shower,
wishing it would come off me like a coat,
so I could thrift a cheetah print coat,
put it on my soft glass skin,
and sink under its weight.
