Rain man

by Christian Ward

The consultant called me
rain man because I conjured
downpours every time
my medication was due.

Flooded the CCU enough
times to warrant building
a miniature ark from sky-blue
blankets and crash mats

still carrying the weight
of other patient’s pain.
I loved making an island
of the hospital bed,

watching everything brought
to me by currents of Dettol,
every mop growling like a dog
distracted from its underworld.
