When We Smile

By Delphine Gauthier-Georgakopoulos

When a child smiles, a ray of sunlight comforts old bones, scars heal themselves in its warmth,
lips lift upward, eyes shine. Contagious Purity.
When a mother smiles, worries melt into oblivion, sadness evaporates like morning dew, a
rainbow of love following the tears.
When a lover smiles, gentle, heartfelt melody as eyes gaze down. A blossom appears on a visage,
from bud to red rose, one on each cheek.
When a stranger smiles, the gentle gift raises eyebrows. Hesitation. The insignificant gesture,
little act of kindness, offers a droplet of joy in an ocean of gloom.
When depression smiles, she covers her torment and suffering, fights through the fog, looking
for light, offers comfort where she finds none.
When empathy smiles, she stops teardrops from flooding the soul, brings compassion to a world
lacking, a glimpse of hope through the darkness.
