You Made Pancakes For Your Family and I Am Melting

Loving you is cruel like that.

Hazel. Whatever that means.

Brown - green - amber pools that exist around a pupil
glowing in the sunlight while you stand here with your hands in

your pockets and tell me about your morning.

Who do you think you are?

You’re beautiful in an ugly way, a violent way, the best way.
Your hair is messy, the strands are shining, and your smile lines are

carved into your skin.
I just realized I love you.

A couple of months ago we had a conversation I know you don’t remember.
You told me you were five and got a slingshot for your birthday and you shot
at birds and cried when they died. You kept aiming at them regardless,

mourning their loss, a robin in your crosshairs.
Loving you is cruel like that.

I was sitting on my fathers’ parents’ trampoline, also five, and I would

pull the wings off butterflies and rip the legs off spiders.
Maybe your hazel eyes are like a magnifying glass in the hands of a kid

focusing the sun on my chest
waiting for smoke. I want to explode.
