Pre-Mortem Contemplations

by Adia Reynolds

If the universe is infinite then why can’t we be?

B: I don’t want to live forever.
A: Well, no, of course not. But reincarnation sounds nice.
Bu: No, I don’t want to be reincarnated either.
Al: But doesn’t it scare you?
Bur: What about it is scary?
Ali: Death.
Buri: It comes for us all, doesn’t it?
Aliv: Well, yes, of course it does. But I can’t fathom that being the end.
Burie: A deep, final breath is the penultimate peace before the end.
Alive: I have to believe that there is something afterward.
Buried: I do not.
Alive With: I suppose as long as we both find peace in it. But I want to meet you again, in
something beyond this.
Buried With: If we met over and over as reincarnate lovers, then the over-saturation would
devalue the love we have found in this life.
Alive Without: Destiny devalues devotion?
Buried With Lungs: Something like that.
Alive Without Breath: But I want to love you forever.
Buried With Lungs Still: The infinite desires of a finite soul.
Alive Without Breath: If the universe is infinite then why can’t we be?
Buried With Lungs Still Oxygenated: If the universe was capable of love then why would it need us to stand witness to the emotion?
Alive Without Breath: Death is the price of love?
Buried With Lungs Still Oxygenated by Leftover Adoration: I’d pay it again and again for you.
