Walk Away

by Megan Diedericks

‏‏‎ ‎

the wind swept up
the memories twirling in my head:
it spun out of control, and dropped
when i stopped
next to it.

mesmerized by the flashes of the past,
i stood in a trance, as the future passed me by.

the pain is dull now,
like a tiny thorn between two fingers.

i barely feel it now, but i know –
one wrong move and i might bleed again,
and all that healing
would’ve been all for nothing.

the words twirl in their best ballet slippers,
every turning page is a different scene
with the same old story.

i don’t feel anything when i think of you,
but the ways you dressed up the truth
and the sweet siren songs you would sing
haunt me, still.

i was blinded back then,
and i still get blinded now.

the only difference is,
i know when the wind starts howling
and the dancers lace up their shoes –
it’s time for me to walk away.
