The Light

by Laura Catanzano

Isn’t it all worth it if
for only one deep inhale
one fleeting moment
one peaceful sigh …

Isn’t it all worth it if

for only one deep inhale

one fleeting moment

one peaceful sigh

of sweet contentment

if only for a pump of the Blue Jay’s

rested wings-

Isn’t all the hardness,

the tumbling around

between the rocks

at the bottom of the riverbend

when you don’t know which way is up

and down is the only direction

it seems you travel-

Isn’t it always worth it if

you’re scratched and kicked

bruised and bleeding

all lips and teeth and

tongue and feet-

‏‏‎ ‎

Isn’t it always worth it

when after the darkest

night, when not even the

stars have shown up to tell you

you’re not alone and you don’t think

you can hold on through

another second of the

aching-

‏‏‎ ‎

Isn’t it always worth it?

When at last the sun rises, and

you feel the light?
